How to Improve Your Blog Page Speed

Blog Page SpeedYour blog page speed is one of those important elements that most bloggers forget about… especially newbies.

In case you didn’t know, how quickly your blog loads is very important and can affect your blog’s usability. If your blog page speed is to slow, meaning it takes too long to load, a lot of internet surfers just shut it down and move on to the next site. So what do most people consider too long? Just a few seconds.

In this post, I’ll touch on a few things you can tweak to improve your blog page speed and make sure your blog is optimized to load quickly .

I do realize that most of the things listed here may be over a lot of heads. That’s okay. I like writing for my more seasoned readers as well, from time to time. Experienced bloggers will understand the importance of improving their blog speed, but if you don’t understand most of what’s written here, book-mark it for later. The time will come where you’ll understand it all and you’ll want to find this post again.

What you can do to increase your blog page speed.

1.  Make sure that you’re optimizing all of your images. A lot of imaging software programs have a feature that allows you to save the image for the web. Make sure you’re using this feature. Images that aren’t optimized can cause your blog to be ‘heavy’ which in turn, will affect your blog page speed.

2.  Choose the correct format for your images. Believe it or not, how you handle the images you place within your blog posts will have a lot to do with your blog page speed. One of the most suitable file types for images is .jpeg. In addition to getting the best color for your images, jpeg is also great for photographs. Most of gif images are designed with flat color and work best with buttons or logos. PNG images will support even more colors, as well as allow you to use transparent backgrounds.

3.  Optimize your CSS code. Now if you’re anything like I was when I first started, just the letters CSS could completely scare you away from your computer, but don’t leave. If you don’t understand CSS right now, don’t sweat it. You don’t have to know anything about it to have a successful blog. If you do know about using CSS, try using a “Clean CSS Tool” to aggregate and clean your CSS code. You can use a tool called CleanCSS, which will merge similar selectors, remove properties that aren’t needed, and remove the white-space from your code. All of these tactics will have an impact on your blog page speed.

4.  Include a slash at the end of your links. Every time one of my blog visitors goes to the page “http://www.howtoblog101.com/about” my server goes to work to determine what the file type or page is. Including a slash (/) at the end of my links will let the server know that this is a directory page. Using slashes will also help improve your blog page speed.

5.  Include height and width tags with your images. This is one that almost all bloggers forget to use. When you include size tags with your images, a spot will be reserved for that image while the rest of your blog is loaded. Ultimately, this helps with your blog page speed as well.

6.  Minimize your http requests. Every time a visitor comes to your blog, objects like images and scripts need to take a trip to the server. This can take more seconds to load your blog and have an adverse effect on your blog page speed. So, reduce the number of objects you’re placing on your blog, and combine the CSS files. You can always find someone from places like ODesk or fiverr to help with this

I’ll say again… I do understand that the topic of blog page speed may be for the more advanced blogger and more than likely very confusing to newbies. For new bloggers, you’ll learn these things in time, so again… don’t worry about them for now. For more seasoned bloggers… add these practices to your blog and you’ll see an immediate change in your blog page speed.

To check your blog page speed, there ‘s a free tool that can help you. It will tell you what your current blog page speed is and let you know exactly what you need to do to improve how quickly your blog loads for your readers.
