Are you doing everything to protect your blog from hackers?
Unfortunately, blog security is something that most bloggers tend to overlook. So why is it important to make sure you’re guarding this all important property of yours and keeping it away from hackers.
Because hackers tap into as many WordPress blogs as possible to get them to other places online… and quite often, places you wouldn’t want your blog associated with.
If your blog gets hacked, you could end up having to start all over from scratch… not just rebuilding your content, but rebuilding your relationships as well. Not fun. But, there are some things you can do to protect yourself from this disaster.
So let’s take a look at some ways you can protect your blog from hackers.
1. Don’t Use a Weak Password
Many bloggers don’t give their password much consideration until something bad happens. Some people take picking a strong password for granted until something goes really wrong. Hackers love easy passwords like 123… abc… What’s there to guess? You want to keep your password unique and hard to figure out. Make it too simple and you’re setting yourself up for trouble. And to be on the safe side… it wouldn’t hurt to change it from time to time.
2. Use a Username That Won’t Be Easy to Guess
For some reason, most WordPress bloggers use “admin” as a password. Hackers know this, so you’ve just made their job a lot easier. Pick a user name that’s unique and can’t be easily guessed by a stranger.
3. Get Protection From Blog and Website Hackers
There is a WordPress plugin that causes your blog to be locked down if hackers make too many attempts at logging in. The plugin is called Login Lockdown. This plugin will cause hackers to be locked out if they try to log in too many times without success. The IP range and time-stamp are both logged. This plugin will prevent your password from easily being discovered.
4. Keep Your WordPress Up To Date
If your blog software is outdated, hackers love it. They can get in easier and reek havoc without you even knowing. So when you see the note to upgrade your WordPress blog, be sure to upgrade. Give it about a week to give your plugins time to catch up and make their updates so that everything continues to work properly.
5. Update Your Plugins
Once you’ve upgraded your blog, you’ll need to upgrade any plugins that have changes. This will be easy to do because any plugin updates will show up in your dashboard. Be sure not to ignore this. Older versions of your plug-ins could cause your blog to run a little sluggish and slow down your load time.
6. Backup Your Blog
You always want to have a copy of your data-base files. If anything ever does happen to your blog, you want to be able to get back up and running in minutes. You definitely don’t want to have to try rebuilding everything from scratch. I use a plugin called WP-DB-Backup that sends me an email of my data-base back up every single day. You can schedule your blog to be backed up with emails sent to you or files saved to your computer.
7. Protect WordPress Directories
This is a short and sweet fix, but one that shouldn’t be ignored. You also want to protect your WordPress Directories. Now, this may be a little advanced if you’re new but it’s not difficult and you can get someone to help you. Find your .htaccess file and add this line: “options-indexes”. That’s it!
Here’s the bottom line. You’ve worked really hard to create a great blog with great content. You may already be getting comments on your blog posts and your traffic may be growing. However, if you haven’t secured your blog, all of your hard work could be destroyed in an instant. So, don’t ignore these points.
Take the time to do whatever you need to do to protect your blog from hackers and ensure your blog security. Don’t put it off. You’ll be glad and more hackers will be out of business!
