Are you ready to go for the gusto to create a top blog?
First let me explain what I mean by creating a top blog. This means that you have one of the most popular and relevant blogs within your niche. Your blog becomes the “place to be” when it comes to finding solutions and answers to information that people who read your blog would want to know about.
In my opinion, everyone who starts a blog should be considering creating a top blog. It takes work, but it’s rewarding both emotionally and financially.
What Are Some Things Needed to Create a Top Blog?
Top Bloggers write posts regularly, even when they’re not in the mood.
It kind of doesn’t matter what else is going on in the life of a top blogger. He or she could have just had a fight with their spouse, maybe the kids got in trouble at school, or maybe you’re just tired of blogging and want to take a break. You can’t.
Why?
Because your readers are expecting to see a new blog post from you. Maybe you write weekly, bi-weekly… even daily. Whatever your readers have grown accustomed to, they’ve grown to expect it. If you want a top blog, you’ll have to always deliver the goods. Disappoint your readers, and it can hurt you.
So if you want to create a top blog, be willing to write even when you don’t want to.
Top Bloggers are willing to let their readers get a little up close and personal.
Quite often bloggers aren’t willing to share things of a personal nature. Now don’t get me wrong here. I’m not referring to things that are of a confidential or private nature. I mean things that will allow your readers to see inside who you really are. What you believe, what you read, your failures, your successes…
I can usually spot a top blog before even checking the Alexa ranking because as I read through it, I’m spotting things that most people shy away from sharing.
I read one top blog where the author actually shared his experience of breaking up with his wife. He shared his journey which most people would never do. But you can believe… it kept his readers coming back.
Another top blogger shared a major business mistake that he’d made. A decision caused him to miss out on millions of dollars. This is something that most would never be willing to admit.
The reality is, when your readers follow some of your real life stories, it helps them to connect with you more than anything else on your blog.
If you want a top blog, be willing to become a little vulnerable.
But I must warn you here… you also need to be willing to take harsh criticism from people you don’t even know.
This is actually a downside of being open on your blog. People can be rude and insensitive. Many will make comments that won’t put a smile on your face. But remember… having a top blog almost makes you a “public figure” and everyone in the public eye will get attacked at one time or another — whether it’s one or two people or an entire group who has an opposing opinion.
To create a top blog, you have to be real, be you… even if it’s not the most popular view.
Do you love your topic. If you don’t yet, fall in love with it or pick another one. Do you love marketing? This goes without saying. No marketing… no business.
This was a major problem for me. I really enjoy writing. Marketing is okay, but if I could just write and write I’d be very happy. So if you’re the type that hates marketing, you’ve got to get really good at outsourcing. We’ll save that topic for another post.
If you’re doing your own marketing, the rule of thumb is that however much time you spend writing posts for your blog, you need to spend an equal amount of time marketing, particularly during your first six months. Getting your blog in front of new people needs to be one of your main priorities.
So, now it’s time to ask yourself the question again. Are you willing to go the extra mile to create a top blog, and not a mediocre one?
Now, understand also that just because you blog, you don’t have to be creating a top blog. Many bloggers do so for fun and to provide a place to share updated information to their family or organization. But… if your purpose for blogging is to create an income, the goal to create a top blog shouldn’t be in question.
Hopefully this post has given you a little insight on what direction you should be going with your blog. Either way you choose is okay, because it’s your blog and you’re the boss. That’s the best part!
